The Registry stores a vast amount of information that's constantly being used by your Windows operating system. It's the repository for important data such as user profiles, application data, the types of documents that applications can create, hardware profiles, and much more.
Some Registry settings can be accessed through Control Panel applets or other specialized utilities. But editing or analyzing other settings requires the use of a Registry editor.
